Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific calls from the official, following the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
